Are You More Like Goofus...or More Like Gallant?

Goofus and Gallant® may look pretty young, but they are actually older than Highlights magazine. The magazine's founder, Garry Cleveland Myers, first used the two characters to promote family discussion and teach children to develop their own code of conduct in the 1930s. When the feature began, they weren't even boys. They were elves with pointy little ears!

Goofus and Gallant appeared in Highlights in 1948 and ever since have shown its youthful readers that there are two ways to act in a situation—the Goofus way and the Gallant way. We hope they'll choose the Gallant way, but we know that even adults don't manage that all the time.
